15/07/2005 - Traditionally the highlight of the Formula Ford year, the end-of-season festival has been held at Brands Hatch for over 30 years. After interest in the event dropped in previous years, race organisers the British Racing and Sports Car Club have now decided to combine the two specifications of Formula Ford for 1600 and 1800cc engines after initially announcing that the festival would run for only 1600cc machines. It is hoped that the move will enable healthy grids to be established for what will be the farewell meeting for 1800cc machines.
Having powered the UK Formula Ford Championship and festival for over 10 years, the 1800cc Zetec engine will be phased out in 2006, and replaced by a 1600cc Duratec (Sigma) engine, as used in the new Ford Focus. As such, the October event will be the last major event for 1800cc Formula Fords.
"Ford of Britain has committed a Festival prize fund for the 1800s which we are confident will result in teams from both the UK championship and those across Europe putting in strong entries for this 'blue riband' event," said Bernard Cottrell, Chairman of the British Racing & Sports Car Club. "Allied to Ford's announcement of their long term support for the national championship this really is a good news day for the future of the Formula Ford Festival."
The festival will take place on the weekend of October 21-23, and the two categories of Ford will compete in separate races.
In addition to the Formula Fords there will be support races for Sports 2000 (Pinto), Pro Sports 2000 (Duratec), Heritage Grand Touring Car Challenge, Ford Saloons Championship, Ford Fiesta Championship, Caterham Roadsports, Radical Enduro, Radical Biduro, Formula Jedi & BRDC Single seaters.
