Shuttleworth & Nuffield Trophies meeting brings nostalgia to Lincolnshire
14/06/2005 - For the 29th year, the Cadwell Park race circuit echoed sounds of a nostalgic era as 11 races provided high entertainment on Sunday 12 June.
The first race of the day was the Frazer Nash race, an annual event which sees a large contingent from the Frazer Nash section of the Club appearing at the event.
The Nash drivers dominated many races of the day, notably Brian White with his rebuilt 1934/38 BMW engined Frazer Nash TT Replica who romped away with the Frazer Nash race and finished third in the Shuttleworth and Nuffield Trophies Race.
Will Mahany made it three race wins out of three race meetings this season by taking the Spero and Voiturette Trophies, a mantle he has longed for many years to get his hands on! The trophy was his for the taking as his 1938 HRG was on song giving him a 1m18s lead on Tim Kneller who finished second in his Riley 9 Brooklands.
The Nashs were back in force in the Melville and Geoghan Trophies Race and Charles Gillet from Beverly in East Yorkshire took the win after some slick driving in his 1929 Frazer Nash Super Sports. The Three Wheeler Morgan race is an event not to be missed as seventeen of these extremely agile little cars took to the track with passengers for five exhilarating laps. Greg Bibby with passenger Paul Heaney as riding ballast took the win.
Similarly the Formula 3 (500) race is another ear shattering experience and Simon Diffey was thrilled to win the race in Mark Palmers 1955/62 Cooper Norton Mark 9 after trading the lead with James Culver for many laps. Simon had never sat in the car before Saturday night and was ecstatic to have finished first among a field of such plucky racers.
The John Holland and Williams Trophy Race was high in contention for race of the day as a superb mix 23 cars battled it out for this coveted award. One of the race win favourites, Mac Hulbert in his 1930 Alvis Silver Eagle racing car retired after the first lap with engine trouble paving the way for Tom Walker to dominate the race although Jonathan Cobb was in hot pursuit for several laps.
The Williams trophy goes to the highest placed Bugatti and Geraint Owen driving G Littles 1929 Bugatti Type 35B enjoyed a close dice with Mike Preston, (1926 Bugatti 35B) getting past him on the sixth lap to win the Williams trophy. Driver of the race was Duncan Pittaway who was enjoying the fact that his 1921 GN Vitesse was back on song after mechanical problems earlier in the day but at one point he was witnessed coming up The Mountain backwards with his exuberant driving!
The Shuttleworth and Nuffield Race was dominated by Mac Hulbert with ERA R4D, racing in its county of origin. The ERA made a superb whine as he cruised around the circuit finishing fifteen seconds ahead of Stephen Davie in the Riley Dobbs S/S.
Ben Fidler in his 1935 Lagonda Rapier Single Seater won the Len Thomson Memorial Trophy in an emotional end to the day as Len's wife Brenda and family presented the trophy in memory of her husband.
