Majestic Mosler sweeps to Britcar victory at Brands Hatch

Eric O'Brien

07/11/2009 - For the second consecutive year, Sean McInerney triumphed at the Britcar 'into the night' race at Brands Hatch last Saturday (7 November) - with just 10 seconds separating the top three cars after 90 minutes of racing.

McInerney started the endurance race - Brands Hatch's only event that takes place in the dark - from pole position, leading the field on the first run into Paddock Hill Bend.

An opening lap tangle between the Porsche of father and son team Jim and Glynn Geddie and Duncan Cameron's Ferrari 430 brought out the safety car early on, but McInerney maintained his advantage at the restart on lap 12 - setting the fastest lap during his charge.

A second safety car period ensued on lap 44 when the TVR Sangaris of Tim Hood hit the pit wall, which triggered a flurry of pit stops in order to swap drivers.

Drama occurred once McInerney handed over the Mosler to his team-mate Phil Keen, however, as the pair were awarded a drive through penalty for exiting the pit lane under a red light.

Keen's penalty allowed the Porsche 911 of Adrian Slater to assume the lead, with the Mosler rejoining in second place. However, two further safety car periods following vehicles going off at Hailwoods and Clearways brought the field closer together.

When the race restarted for the final time with eight minutes remaining, the leading duo were nose-to-tail with the Barwell Motorsport Ginetta of Nigel Moore and Michael Greenhalgh close behind.

Keen set a succession of fastest laps to secure a well-deserved overall victory, whilst Greenhalgh snatched second place from Slater's Porsche.

Britcar 'into the night' race, Brands Hatch, result:
1. Keen/McInerney (Mosler MT900R), 91 laps
2. Moore/Greenhalgh (Ginetta G50Z), +5.763s
3. Sumpter/Slater (Porsche 911), +9.525s
4. Gamski/Robinson (Ferrari F360), +1 lap
5. Beaumont/Fores (Mosler MT900R), +1 lap
6. Jordan/Jordan (Ginetta G50), +1 lap
7. Dhillon/Khandan-Nia (Ferrari F430), +2 laps
8. Barrett/Persson/Shepherd (Porsche 996), +3 laps

The next event at Brands Hatch is Lotus Endurance Saturday on 14 November. Tickets cost from £10 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0870 950 9000 or click on the link below.
